Samsung Announces 5G Modem With 3GPP Standards!

Expect 5G phones to come at the end of the year. Many developments regarding 5G have already been made and Motorola has released a Mod for its phone to support 5G. And now Samsung has joined the 5G group by early access with its own 5G modem. The name of the modem is Exynos 5100. The Company claims that the Modem is industry’s first fully 5G compatible Modem.

However, This is just what Samsung claims, but the first Modem with 5G related to it was of course Qualcomm’s X50 Modem and we expected that as they are one of the biggest players in the game. The X50 was announced years ago and many companies are in on this plan of using this modem. The Modem according to Samsung compiles all the rules for 3GPP standard. The Exynos 5100 supports both Sub- 6GHz as well as mmWave shares of the electromagnetic spectrums used by the 3GPP’s 5G standard. The chip also supports other common networks like, 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE all in a single chip. Samsung claims that the 5100 can reach speeds of up to 2Gbps per second in the sub-6Ghz range of the spectrum and up to 6Gbps using mmWave signals, which are both significant boosts over what’s currently possible on 4G.

For those who don’t know what 3GPP is, 3GPP are rules or minimum requirements for a company to call a modem 5G compatible and the rules are- Latency targets, an important performance indicator for 5G, are as low as 0,5 ms for tactile interaction. Capacity targets can be as high as 15 Tbps/km2 with 250 000 users/km2 for indoor hotspots such as office environments.
