Intel Naming Scheme Explained!! Know What All The Letters Mean!

We all know that the tech community suffers from the process of naming things. Like you knew what USB-C meant until you read this article. And Intel- One of the biggest processor manufacturers is no exception to this age-old tradition! If you want to know more about the numbers in their processor names you can check that article out here. In this article we will try to cover all the existing and well-known letter in Intel processor names. If you are looking to buy a new device we would suggest you to read this entire article.

   K
  Unlocked CPU
The letter K means that the CPU is unlocked and can be easily overclock able or we should put it this way- It was meant to be overclocked. K means the same even if used with H in HK and now we should move onto H.

   H
   High Performance
H means High-Performance, H processors are used mostly in High-End Mobile device and generally have higher TDPs. H processor are widely used in laptops which run CPU intensive programs. H processors mostly have a Q at the end in Mid to High budget laptops, So let’s move on to Q.

  Q
  Quad-core
As we said earlier that Q is mostly used with H it is used in High-Performance devices. Thus, Q stands for Quad-core processors from Intel one of the most commonly used Intel HQ processors is Intel core i7 7700HQ.

  M
  Mobile Processor
M stands for Mobile Processor and is used in Laptops and Tablets. M currently only represents Xeon processors.

  U And Y
  Mobile Processors
U and Y processors are used in Ultrabook and Portables, Which have a focus on battery rather than performance. Y processors use extremely low power and some Y processors have TDPs as low as 4.5. These processors are also used in some laptops which are battery performance centric.

  E
  Support For ECC Memory
Processors with E as a suffix mean that the processor has support for ECC memory. ECC- Error-correcting code memory is a kind of computer data storage which can detect and correct the most common kinds of internal data corruption.

  G
  Built-in Graphics
G series processors have built-in RX Vega Radeon graphics on the same board as the CPU. It is to be noted that Radeon is not Intel’s competitor AMD but separate Radeon Technologies Group.

  T
  Desktop Processor
T series of CPU are generally used in small or compact desktops. You can find T series CPUs in All-in-Ones as well as compact desktops. These CPUs also tend to have lower TDPs.

  P
  Desktop Processor
The letter P is used to indicate that the CPU is a desktop grade processor but these have slower GPUs. Older P processors did not have iGPUs. These CPUs are generally cheap and are used by people who are going to buy a great Graphics Card either ways.

  Older [Broadwell (5000 Series)]
   R

R is used to indicate High-end Mobile processors in the older series and it is similar to H used today.

    C

The letter C was used to indicate that the processor was unlocked and was same as K in current generations.

  X
  Best Offering

X is the most dramatic letter and has some of the best offerings from intel for their consumer grade market. The letter X means Very High-end processor. The X series has it’s i9-7980XE as it’s best offering. It is to be noted that here E stands for Extreme and not to be confused with E for ECC memory support.

That was a quick take on intels naming scheme concering all the consusing letter, Which may not be confusing anymore as we mentioned every letter that we know of.  Remember that frequently the letters added at the end of an Intel CPU number can stand for CPU Name, Launched, Cores, Max Turbo, Max Base, Cache, Video, Price.
