IPS vs TN vs VA Display Panel..Which is the best?

In this post not only we are going to decide which panel technology is the best but also which panel is the best for you according to your preferences and consumption. First of all IPS, TN and VA panels are all display Panel technologies and are completely different than LCD, LED, OLED and Quantum Dot. If you want to know about them we have another post on them. To read that post go here. Now, back to IPS, TN and VA panels here we are going to differentiate between them based on their weakness and strengths. To your average consumer this might not be such a big concern but for gamers or content creator or even high-end users, this is a major concern.

Let's begin with TN panels which stand for Twisted Nematic display panels. Most of the monitors out there are using TN panels as they are cheaper and made easily. Twisted nematic panels are known best for their response rate and their refresh rate which are higher than most of the IPS and VA panels. So, you would see very smooth frame changes or animations using TN panels as their refresh rate is higher. But, the biggest weakness of TN panels is their poor color production and low viewing angles. If you are not at the center of the display you won't be able to see accurate colors in most cases. TN panels have very poor color accuracy and viewing angles. But some new TN panels by well-known brands are according to change that too. So to put it together TN panels are great in terms of refresh rate and average or poor in terms of color accuracy and viewing angles.
Next up is IPS display panel which stands for In-Plane Switching panels. IPS panels are an improvement to the TN panels with better viewing angles and ample color accuracy as well as image accuracy and decent color production abilities. IPS panels are easy to differentiate from TN panels because if a company uses IPS panel they like to mention it as a feature and as a pro, So if a display is using IPS panel you will see it mentioned somewhere. IPS panels are well suited for graphics designing and gaming. Although, You can notice some color shifts to green and black from wider viewing angles. Long story short IPS panels have good viewing angles good color accuracy along with decent color production.

The last type is VA display panels which is an acronym for Vertical Alignment panels. It is a type of LCD panel which uses electric current and liquid crystal. Just like IPS panels, VA panels are also an improvement on TN panels for higher picture quality. The biggest pro of  VA panel is its ability to stop light when not required. This allows the panel to display better contrast ratio and a bit deeper blacks. VA panels also have wider viewing angle and better color production. But, they also cost more than TN panels and about or more than IPS panels. So, it is well-suited for multi-media consumption and gaming. So, according to your priorities, you can choose one of these panels.
