Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Could Launch With a Dedicated NPU!

For almost a year now, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 has been the most used SoC for all flagship devices as it has not released the successor-Snapdragon 850 possibly. But, new reports are hinting to the arrival of the chipset, with one of the reports stating performance leaks of a Lenovo device running Windows with Snapdragon 855. Some of the newer leaks even stayed that the processor could even have its own dedicated NPU. Previous reports have stated that TSMC would be manufacturing the SoC on its 7nm process. Now, For Now, let’s take a look at the NPU leak:

The conclusion that the chip will have dedicated NPU can easily be justified by the performance of the competitors. The Kirin 970’s NPU has shown itself to be significantly faster than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 with its Hexagon DSP for performing AI operations. In the real world, its potential hasn’t been used to its full extent, apart from features such as accelerated offline translation, AI scene detection in the camera app, and more. If this is true then this will be the first time that Qualcomm will use a NPU for the first time in one of its chips.

The LinkedIn profiles of Qualcomm employees also say a lot about the upcoming chips. The profiles also indicate that the employees have been hard at work to make the upcoming flagship processor. The employees’ statements demonstrate that this is a separate part of the system-on-chip. According to the statements, the employees have worked on routing the data streams between the CPU, NPU, and main memory. For those who don’t know what a NPU is, A NPU is a class of microprocessor designed to accelerate artificial neural networks, machine vision and other machine learning algorithms for robotics, internet of things and other data-intensive or sensor-driven tasks. They are often many core designs and generally focus on low-precision arithmetic, novel dataflow architectures or in-memory computing capability.

According to some other reports and claims, Lenovo has claimed to be the first company to make a phone with Snapdragon 855 and 5G support, speaking of 5G, you can learn about the new 5G modem by Samsung here. And it can also be said that the Snapdragon 855 chipset will make a better use of all the bandwidth and other functions of 5G with its dedicated NPU. For now all of these information are just leaks and when they shape up to be confirmed reality, you can learn about them and other news and Tech information at RW Tech Blog.
