Top 5 Misused Tech Terms! Tech Myth Smashers!

There are many terms you throws around like a boss and consider yourself as a Tech Head. But, do you really know that most people misuse common tech terms? And if you are one of the people who get tired yelling people because they misuse tech terms you will enjoy this article either ways! With a growing list of technology terms to remember, it can be difficult to use them all correctly. We have all misused one or two tech terms and we understand but it is always good to get your facts straight. We have prepared this list of Top 5 misused Tech terms right here.

1 SD cards are not Hard Drives

We may have not noticed this with the newer generation as they often know that a Hard Drive is a storage device that has a spinning arm inside it to access data. And if you don’t, No big deal, you can learn about it here. SD cards are definitely not hard. And if someone calls a SSD Hard drive it is still acceptable and is not that big of a deal even though that is not technically true. A hard drive by its definition is an electromechanical data storage device that uses magnetic storage to store and retrieve digital information using one or more rigid rapidly rotating disks (platters) coated with magnetic material. The platters are paired with magnetic heads, usually arranged on a moving actuator arm, which read and write data to the platter surfaces.

2 GPU is not Graphics Card

This is one of the most common misconception everyone has and even Tech Enthusiasts sometimes interchange the term GPU and Graphics card which are totally different things. GPU refers to a part of CPU that renders images, animations and video for the computer's screen. GPUs are located on plug-in cards, in a chipset on the motherboard or in the same chip as the CPU. Whereas, The Graphics Card is an expansion card which generates a feed of output images to a display frequently, these are advertised as discrete or dedicated graphics cards.

3 Disk and Disc are not the same thing

Most of the people you will meet in your whole life won’t know that Disk and Disc are two different thing. Disk refers to a device implementing such a storage mechanism. Remarkable types are the hard disk drive containing a non-removable disk, the floppy disk drive, and various optical disc drives and associated optical disc media. In contrast Disc is a flat, usually circular disc which encodes binary data (bits) in the form of pits and lands on a special material on one of its flat surfaces.

 4 i5 is 5th Generation & i7 is 7th Generation

You might have this misconception up your sleeve that i5 means 5th generation and i7 mean 7th generation. No, the generation number and i’s are not the same. i5 can be a seventh generation processor and one of such example is i5-7600K, you can understand about these in detail here. Apparently Intel has a pretty neat process of naming their processors which is not that hard to understand and completely makes sense even to the dumbest person on the world.

5 Web and Internet are not the same

Meanwhile, Web and Internet are closely related but not the same as they differ in their definitions. Web is an information space where documents and other web resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locators, interlinked by hypertext links, and accessible via the Internet. English scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989. The Internet is not synonymous with World Wide Web. The Internet is a massive network of networks, a networking infrastructure. It connects millions of computers together globally, forming a network in which any computer can communicate with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the Internet.
