MicroLED Explained!! A Replacement For OLED?

It is obvious that our quest for high resolution is not going to fade away any time soon and is positively increasing! The best displays considered today are OLED displays. In an OLED display the blacks are pitch blacks and colour accuracy and other factors are generally better than other techs we use today. But, it does not mean that it can’t get better than this, does it? It definitely does and MicroLED might just be the answer. Read this article till the end to know the perfect answer and how MicroLED is better than OLED.

OLED is considered the best because of certain reasons such as its ability to project colours accurately and as vibrantly as possible. But, it still does not mean there are no drawback to OLED. OLED consumes more power than any other tech we use today, While providing some of the greatest features and consume less power than LCD. Quantum Dot and Plasma are still high up in the list and are not used quite frequently. You can know more about all of these various technologies here in detail. The Micro-LED market is still at a very early stage. The only Micro-LED display in production is Sony's.

But, Let’s just try to keep MicroLED in limelight for this post. MicroLED is an enhancement over LED but it seems like it is an overall development over OLED. MicroLED as it suggests by the name display consists of arrays of microscopic LEDs forming individual pixels. OLED is the bleeding tech we use today to pixelate even displays on small form factors such as Phones, Smartwatches and Hand Bands. But, MicroLEDs are specially aimed at being used in small sizes such as Smartwatches and Phones. OLED and microLED both offer greatly reduced energy requirements compared to conventional LCD systems. Unlike OLED, MicroLED is based on conventional GaN LED technology, which offers far higher total brightness than OLED produces, as much as 30 times, as well as higher efficiency in terms of lux/W. It also does not suffer from the shorter lifetimes of OLED.

Today, MicroLED displays have not been mass-produced or commercialized, though Samsung demonstrated a prototype at CES. MicroLEDs are more power-efficient, Higher Contrast Ratio, and greater colour saturation and are closely related to OLED if not the same. Companies like Apple and Samsung are trying hard to bring MicroLEDs to mainstream. Samsung is even trying to manufacture some MicroLED TVs, While Apple is focusing on MicroLED Smartwatches.

While MicroLED is definitely better than OLED, We surely will do better in the near future. MicroLED is definitely going to come into mainstream in the near future and companies are developing many gadgets. In early 2018 Samsung has unveiled its first Micro-LED display, the 146” WALL – which is also made from tiled displays. Samsung will despatch this display commercially in 2018, and LG already announced it will also reveal a similar display soon. In March 2018, Bloomberg informed Apple to have about 300 engineers dedicated to in-house improvement of MicroLED displays.
