HDD, SSD, And SSHD Explained! Which Is Best Storage Option?
Storage- It’s something we love, want and adore. But, just more storage is not the best thing. We need quick access to our data and also portability to access data quickly and carry it with us all the time. This quest for the ultimate storage option has led us to many different storage technologies and we are still progressing leaps and bounds in the storage department. Drives with storage up to 3 TB exist and also have pretty fast read and write speeds like 500Gbps. But, these no every other consumer can buy it as it is priced above what your average consumer can pay. But, your average user might not need 3 TB storage with 500Gbps speed, yet when a 3 TB SSD is priced low we can say that we have progressed a lot in the storage department. But, for now, there are major types of storage technologies viz. HDD, SSD and the lesser known SSHD. Read this article till the end to know in detail about these storages and what they offer.
The most known and used is HDD, we think most of the users know what is and probably use it, but don’t know what it actually offers. HDD stands for Hard Disk Drive. This is the most conventional storage technology and is still well reliable for your average user with certain specific needs, but we wouldn’t recommend it to everyone. HDD typically suits Desktops as it was made for desktops. HDD actually uses physically moving actually rotating component to read the data. The drive rotates rapidly and the data is read with the help of an arm. The data is read according to the speed of rotation of the drive which is mentioned on the drive. The biggest advantage of HDD is that it is cheap and can hold a lot of data. Standard drives have data holding capacities ranging from 1TB to 10TB. But, Ironically, the biggest drawback is that HDD drives have slow read and write capabilities and can also get corrupt by physical damage like falling from hand accidental kick to the CPU. They are pretty intricate and have lifespans of 5-6 years depending on how you handle them. That covers everything you should know about HDD as a consumer or even tech enthusiast.
Turning the page, we are greeted by our favorite- SSD. SSD is an abbreviation for Solid State Drive. By its name, it is concluded that this is a solid form of a drive which means that it does not have any moving component inside it. Then how does it function? This is a flash-based storage. This is the same as it is for RAM. You don’t need to know any further than that. The biggest- like I mean biggest advantage of SSD is that it is way-way faster than HDD. Possibly 10 times faster than your HDD. The next pro is that it is physical damage resistant to a certain extent. Don’t count on us if you are throwing it from the 5th floor. But, it can definitely survive some drops. The next edge for SSD over HDD is that it consumes less power. Which is obvious since it has no moving component like HDD. Now, The disadvantages of SSD. First, it is much more expensive than SSD and cannot house a lot of storage and if then are very-very expensive.
The next storage option has not always been in limelight. SSHD which elaborates to Solid-State Hybrid Drive. This is a mixture of an HDD and an SSD, what it means is your device will sport both options separately. With each assigned to a separate task. The implementation is that your OS that is Operating System is loaded in your SSD to provide much faster loads and better overall performance. Meanwhile, your files and other programs are stored in HDD. This is the most common implementation we find on laptops. Many laptops from famous manufacturers have an SSD of 128-500 GB and an HHD with 1TB or more. That is all about SSHD.
This covers each and every type of storage device used for storage technology used to store data in bulk. These drives are used by everyone as their daily driver and are reliable. You can easily buy these storage drives online or even offline and also have superfluous storage capacities such as 1TB for the average user and up to 30TB for content creators while offering decent read and write speeds. The more you pay the more you get. There is incredible storage technology for users who choose to pay for it. To know more about Technology, subscribe to Rohan Wayangankar’s Blog.
