Do DxO Mark Ratings Matter Anymore In 2019? Tech Talks #1
Cameras in smartphones have been the point of differentiation for a long time and it doesn’t seem like the trend will change anytime soon. The sheer amount of camera sensor in a phone does not matter anymore as there have been phones with two cameras, Three Cameras, and recently four cameras. To firstly understand DxO Mark Ratings in detail read our in-depth article here.
There are also reports of the upcoming Nokia 9 having Five rear camera sensors but at this point, it’s like what do you even do with them? Four, ok, one for Depth info, second for Zoom, third for wide-angle, and fourth as the main sensor but what do you do with the fifth one like Monochrome lens?
DxO Mark Labs had a time when their rating was counted as the chief and put up by brands which became evident and evident with Google’s Pixel and Pixel 2 as well as iPhones and lastly Huawei at the top with their P20 Pro. But the question is “Does it matter anymore?” as even the professionals in photography can’t differentiate between the top picks.
Mind you, DxO labs do have a complicated and sophisticated method of rating phones which is just in their own ways but does getting the highest score matter anymore as most of us can't distinguish anymore! The best camera according to many experts is Pixel 3 or iPhone XS but according to DxO its Huawei’s P20 Pro which has been hounded as “too much” by many!
No doubt that Huawei’s offering is any less than Google’s or Apple’s but is known as a “Softener” or a “Lightener” as its targeted at the Asian Market which is gifted with features like “Beauty Mode”. While DxO clearly mentions their rating process, it is also said that DxO is willing to work with brands to improve their phones ratings but does not tamper with the results.
The clearest sign of all Tech audience not being able to decide the best or even the elite cameras came out in 2018 People’s Choice Camera Awards when the winner was Mate 20 Pro but the runner-up was the POCOPHONE and iPhone was not even selected once which may be due to Twitter’s encoding and other stuff but mainly depends upon saturation and colors.
